ENCINO (CNS) - An 80-year-old man who was fatally shot at a residence in Encino was identified today as authorities continued their investigation into the killing.

Officers were sent at about 5:25 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 4500 block of Densmore Avenue on reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Stuart Herman of Encino died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

A man in his 60s who apparently arrived at the residence while the suspects were still there was pistol-whipped, according to reports from the scene.

Authorities released few details of the investigation into the killing, which was initially characterized as a home invasion. Police said it appears this might not be the first crime committed by the suspects, due to the level of  violence.

``No one starts out with this type of behavior, typically,'' LAPD Detective Sharon Kim told reporters at the scene.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
