Drawbridges are a lot like train crossings and red lights -- the wait always seems longer than it actually is. But that's not true in London, where a bridge that crosses the River Thames was stuck in the open position on Monday.
- "Due to a technical issue, Tower Bridge is currently stuck in a raised position,’’ reports the City of London Corporation, which owns and operates the bridge. "We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
- The failure has caused major traffic backups on both sides of the 127-year-old bridge, which normally opens about 800 times a year to let ships pass, authorities say. As of 3:30 p.m. EST, the bridge had been stuck more than five hours as workers continued their attempts to lower it.
