Truck Carrying 600 lbs of Chlorine Powder Catches Fire, Prompts Evacuation

SIGNAL HILLS (CNS) - A U-Haul truck carrying about 600 pounds of chlorine powder caught fire in the parking lot of a Signal Hills Costco today, prompting an cautionary evacuation of the building.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units were dispatched about 1:55 p.m. to the store in the 2200 block of East Willow Street on reports of the fire, according to a department spokesperson.

Authorities evacuated the Costco and closed off the area in an abundance of caution as the fire was extinguished.

No injuries were reported from either the fire or chemical exposure, according to a department statement.

The cause of the chemical fire was under investigation.
