Owner of Collapsed Florida Building had been Sued for Poor Maintenance

A lawsuit filed in 2015 accused management of failing to maintain the Florida condominium building that collapsed Thursday.

  • In the suit, the owner of one of the units claimed the building’s owners had neglected to maintain an outside wall, leading to water damage and the formation of cracks. It was the second lawsuit to be filed over the same issue, court records indicate.
  • As of mid-Thursday evening, crews were still on the scene searching for the 99 residents that were still unaccounted for. So far, there’s been one confirmed death, authorities say.
  • Why do people automatically assume that things open to the public are safe? Have you ever found yourself in a harrowing situation because you assumed you were safe?
