VENICE (CNS) - A 29-year-old electric scooter rider is facing possible DUI and other charges involving a collision on a Venice sidewalk with a 91-year-old pedestrian who suffered a fatal head injury, police said.
Police said James Cody Skene was riding a rented scooter northbound on a sidewalk running along the east side of Lincoln Boulevard at 9:20 p.m. Saturday when he crashed into the man near Marco Court.
The pedestrian fell and hit his head, while the rider and his female passenger flew off the scooter and crashed onto the sidewalk, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The victim died at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
Skene and the woman on the scooter suffered minor injuries, according to a desk officer at the LAPD's West Traffic Division.
Skene was released on $100,000 bond, according to jail records.
Police reminded everyone that stand-up, electric rental scooters found on sidewalks are required to be driven in the street with only one person on board and traffic laws must be followed. Drivers and riders involved in a collision should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services and remain at the scene to identify themselves.
