Utility Crews Working to Repair Broken Water Main in Pacific Palisades

PACIFIC PALISADES (CNS) - Utility crews were working today to repair a broken 16-inch water main that resulted in flooding at an apartment building in Pacific Palisades.

The problem was reported about 8:20 p.m. Sunday in the 16000 block of West Sunset Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The cast-iron main was installed in 1939, said Deborah Hong of the LADWP. Three customers were without service, and a section of Sunset Boulevard was closed in the area while crews worked to make repairs, Hong said.

“A large volume of water threatened several apartment buildings,” said the Los Angeles Fire Department's Nicholas Prange.

One building was reported damaged, Prange said.

“During the early stages of the incident, there were reports of someone in distress in the water,” Prange said. “ LAFD rescued one person from the water, who was uninjured'.”

Los Angeles County lifeguards helped search deep water in a below- grade parking area to make sure no one was stranded in a submerged vehicle, Prange said.

Firefighters remained on scene pumping water from the flooded parking garage and apartment units. Apartment residents were told to shelter
