Man Killed While Attempting Carjacking in Compton

COMPTON (CNS) - A man was shot to death while attempting a carjacking at a red light in Compton, authorities said today.

It was reported at 8:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Compton Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue, according to Deputy Armando Viera Jr. of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Arriving deputies found the man lying in the intersection, Viera said.

“The male sustained at least one gunshot wound and appeared to have been struck by at least one vehicle that fled the scene,'' he said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Viera said.

“ Investigators learned the male, who was reportedly armed with a handgun, had attempted to carjack a motorist stopped for a red light at the intersection,'' Vierra said. “A shooting occurred and the male was struck by gunfire. At this time it is unknown if the male's death was a result of gunfire or being struck by a vehicle.''

The motorist who had stopped at the red light was waiting for deputies when they arrived and was to be interviewed by investigators, he said.

No further information was available, Viera said.
