Man Armed With 2 Airsoft Weapons Hospitalized for Mental Evaluation

POMONA (CNS) - A man armed with two realistic replica weapons and wearing a tactical vest in Pomona was taken into custody by police and hospitalized for a mental evaluation.

Members of the Pomona Police Department's Major Crimes Task Force responded to a call of an armed man wearing “a military style tactical vast'' in the 1500 block of Ganesha Place, near Alameda Street, at 8 p.m., according to Sgt. Michael Neaderbaomer.

Officers checked the surrounding alleys and spotted the armed man with a rifle “in a low ready position with the barrel pointed halfway between the ground and directly at officers,'' Neaderbaomer said. “The officers who were faced with the potential of a deadly encounter, in the dark alley with no lights, used extreme restraint and control to safely resolve the situation.''

The rifle turned out to be an airsoft weapon. The suspect was also in possession of a realistic replica handgun that also turned out to be an airsoft weapon, Neaderbaomer said.

Based on the man's actions and demeanor, officers took him to a hospital for a mental evaluation, Neaderbaomer said.

His name was not disclosed.
