The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department says a high school substitute teacher who worked at Saugus High School was arrested on suspicion of committing lewd acts with a minor.

David Cornish, 28, was arrested and booked Wednesday on suspicion of lewd acts with a minor and oral copulation with a minor, sheriff officials said. Bail for Cornish was set at $100,000.

“The Hart District is deeply concerned that one of our substitute teachers, David Cornish, was arrested and is expected to be charged with engaging in sexual misconduct with a Saugus High School minor student,” Hart District officials wrote in a statement released Thursday. “The district strives to provide a safe educational environment for all of our students, and we are saddened and disturbed that one of our substitute teachers is being charged with this misconduct.”

Cornish was suspended after district officials learned of the allegations against him.

Detectives with the sheriff's Special Victims Bureau first began investigating the alleged sexual relationship between Cornish and a female student between the month of Aprils and May, the statement says.

The alleged victim told investigators that she'd been "involved in a sexual relationship with her substitute teacher, 28-year-old David Cornish," the statement said.

Detectives say anyone with information on the case is urged to call the Special Victims Bureau at 661-471-1500.
