#TechTalk: How Your Cellphone Could Save You In A Disaster

A fire rages. An earthquake strikes. A tornado rolls through.

Whatever the disaster, life gets throw upside down in a hurry and everyone is forced to respond and react quickly.

When a disaster strikes, so many reliable things become unreliable, but your cellphone doesn't have to be one of them.

If you plan ahead, you can actually use your cell in a variety of extremely useful ways that could possibly save your life when you're facing the most difficult time of your life.

  • Calling 9-1-1 - You don't need to pay for cell service to call 9-1-1. That means it is always an option. Keeping an old phone in your emergency kit is a very smart move.
  • Emergency Apps - There's a variety of apps that dish out emergency notifications that could be vital in certain situations. These apps also have information about emergency kits and meet-up locations.
  • Use Your Wi-Fi - The cell towers may go down, but that doesn't mean you can't make calls. Certain apps allow you to make phone calls using Wi-Fi, but make sure to have them ready before the disaster hits.
  • Make It Usable - There's no point in having your cell if you can't use it. Make sure you waterproof it, whether it is by putting it in a plastic bag or buying a waterproof case. You should also have some sort of backup power source, perhaps a hand-crank cellphone charger.
