LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A former sister-in-law of a Hollywood television producer recently released from a Mexican prison for the killing of his wife in 2010 requested through her lawyer today that she be given notice of future court hearings dealing with the guardianship of her nephew and niece.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Small did not actually address whether Jeanne Burgos was entitled to be provided notice from lawyers for the children's paternal grandmother, Juanita Beresford-Redmond of Gardena, who has filed a petition to be put in charge of their financial affairs. But the judge did say that the petitioner's attorneys need to give notice to anyone who was entitled to it.
Bruce Beresford-Redmond was released this year after serving 7 1/2 years of a 12-year prison sentence imposed on him in March 2015 in Mexico for the death of 41-year-old Monica Beresford-Redmond. Her body was found in April 2010 in a sewer at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun, where the couple was vacationing.
Richard Petty, an attorney for the victim's sister, said after today's hearing that Burgos does not plan to challenge the petition, but wants to keep informed of the proceedings.
Juanita Beresford-Redmond did not appear in court. She and her late husband, David Beresford Redmond, who died in Nov. 18 at age 85, were both guardians of the persons of their grandchildren. She remains in that role and now seeks to take over her late spouse's role as guardian of their estate. The girl is now 14 and the boy is 12.
The hearing on the petition was rescheduled to Dec. 5 at the request of the court-appointed lawyer for the children.
Despite his release from prison, Bruce Beresford-Redmond has not filed any papers to end the guardianship.
Monica Beresford-Redmond owned the Zabumba Bar & Restaurant, a Brazilian eatery on Venice Boulevard in Palms, at the time of her death.
