Border Agents Speak Out

Border Agents Speak Out

Some agents tell me they’re fed up with the way they’re being characterized in the media and how people view them. They tell me it’s not fair that they’re called racists, animals and inhumane.

I had been working for months to get one or more agents on record about their day to day business, especially with the influx of migrants in the Central American Caravan. One day, unexpectedly, I got a text from one of my border patrol sources. They told me after agents were being accused in the media of ripping children from the arms of their illegal immigrant parents they’re finally ready to talk on tape.

I drove to a location in southeastern California where I met with two men who, collectively, have been with the border patrol for more than 30 years. They agreed to speak on the condition I keep their identities a secret. We also agreed their voices would be altered on air. The agents told me how they got into the agency and how they wanted to make a difference. They also said they are proud of the work they do and are mindful of the important role they play in protecting the United States.

The interview seemed a bit therapeutic for the agents because they knew people outside their group of co-workers, friends and family were going to finally hear about the truth of what they go through on a daily basis.
