COSTA MESA (CNS) - The Los Angeles Chargers cut kicker Caleb Sturgis Monday, one day after he missed a field goal attempt and two extra points in a 25-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Rookie Michael Badgley was promoted from the practice squad to replace Sturgis.
“It's always tough to move on from a player,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “I believe in all of these guys. We feel like we gave him a fair shot and we stayed with him as long as we could. It just came down to performances."
Sunday's action was Sturgis' first since Oct. 7. He missed the previous two games because of a quad injury.
Sturgis also missed a field goal attempt and an extra point in his last game before being sidelined, a 26-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders Oct. 7.
Badgley filled in for Sturgis in victories over the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans, making all three of his field goal attempts and all seven extra points. He was cut last Tuesday and signed to the practice squad the next day.
The Chargers may bring in another kicker to handle kickoffs, Lynn said.
“It's something that we're just looking at,” Lynn said. “You hate to do something like that because you lose depth at other positions, but I think Mike is a young kicker that is going to improve in his kickoffs and the strength of his leg.”
