Brother of Stephon Clark Ambushes City Council Meeting

An intense scene unfolded mere minutes after the start of an emotionally charged city council meeting to discuss the shooting of unarmed Stephon Clark.

Stevante Clark, brother to Stephon, charged into the packed room, yelling. He ran passed the lectern, reserved for people who wish to speak in the meeting, and leapt onto the podium where the councilmembers were seated. Clark had his sights set on Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg.

Clark then got on top of the lectern and shouted at the audience telling the Mayor to 'shut up'. The meeting was temporarily adjourned while Steinberg attempted to gain control of the situation.

Clark was ultimately led out of the meeting by police officers. Steinberg told reporters for the Sacramento Bee that he empathizes with the man, that he was not scared, and that it was most raw expression of emotion he's seen.

"I leaned in. I tried to talk to him. That was not possible. I'm strong, and he lost his brother. That's it … It is my job as mayor to bear some of that pain, and the pain so many in that room and in our community are feeling.

"That sort of demonstration in the council chamber cannot happen again. It won't happen again. But in that moment, that was a brother grieving for the loss of his brother."
