ANAHEIM (CNS) - A motorist who refused to exit his car today was in custody in Anaheim almost five hours after a police pursuit that followed a small traffic crash in Orange, authorities said.
After several hours of waiting for the man to come out of the car, ``we deployed some chemical agents into his vehicle,'' Orange police Sgt. Phil McMullin said. The man had been threatening to kill officers.
The man stepped out of the car and police sent Bosco the K-9 to subdue him, McMullin said. The dog bit the man's upper left arm and the man assaulted the dog by punching him.
Police eventually used a Taser to subdue the man and take him into custody about 10:30 p.m., McMullin said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of the dog bite and to be checked after the Taser was used.
The standoff began about 5:45 p.m. on Lincoln Avenue and North Batavia Street, according to Orange police Sgt. Trevor Cullen and Anaheim police.
``The driver hit a trash bin and possibly a car,'' Cullen told City News Service. ``A passerby who saw the accident called us and officers responded to the scene.''
The car was spotted and police tried to pull the man over but the driver refused and a pursuit began, Cullen said.
The motorist went northbound on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway and then westbound on the Riverside (91) Freeway and the Orange (57) Freeway before exiting on Kingsley and traveling down as far as Lincoln and Batavia near the Anaheim-Orange border, police said.
The suspect was expected to be booked for suspicion of DUI, failure to yield, hit and run, threatening officers, assaulting a police dog and an outstanding warrant, McMullin said.
