The Thomas Fire has become the largest wildfire on record in California. The fire burning in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties since Dec 4th has scorched 273,400 acres. That's more than the previous largest wildfire on record, the 2003 Cedar fire which burned 273,246 acres.
More than 1,000 structures have been destroyed, including over 750 homes. San Diego Fire Engineer Cory Iverson died last week while battling the blaze. As of last night, the fire is 65 percent contained.
Fire officials say they expect crews to be working on the fire through January.
The recent milestone confirms 2017 as the most destructive fire season on record for California. In October, Northern California suffered a series of major wildfires as well, where more than 10,000 homes were destroyed and 40 people were killed.
