Nurse Describes Torture Wounds At Child Murder Trial

A forensic nurse testified Friday she documented 'head to toe' wounds, abrasions, and injuries, on the body of an abused 8-year-old boy -- while he was near death in the emergency room of Antelope Valley Hospital.

Alison Segal said she couldn't do a full examination because Gabriel Fernandez's heart stopped several times, his body temperature dropped to 88 degrees, and his blood pressure would plunge any time he was moved.

Segal photographed and documented in diagrams the trauma she could observe.

"These are multiple injuries of different types, there was bruising...there was skin missing on the top of his neck, there were multiple injuries on Gabriel, head to toe," she said.

Jurors were shown many of the photographs so Segal could confirm she had taken the images.

The testimony began the fourth day of trial for Fernandez's mother's boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, who faces a charge of first degree murder with the special circumstance of torture.

A conviction could lead to a death sentence.

Prosecutors say Aguirre and the boy's mother, Pearl Fernandez, inflicted months of physical abuse before the boy was beaten to death inside the couple's apartment in May, 2013.

Earlier this week Fernandez's older brother and sister testified they witnessed much of the abuse.
