(Undated) -- The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the state of California for rejecting mail-in ballots if the signatures didn't appear to match. The ACLU says 45,000 ballots were tossed out in November based only on a clerk's opinion that the signature on a ballot didn't look like the voter's original registration signature.
The Union's attorneys say county election officials aren't experts in handwriting analysis and shouldn't be allowed to make a decision that disenfranchises voters. They argue signatures can vary depending on a voter's physical condition, whether they are standing or sitting and some voters don't have a consistent style or even know it matters.
