LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles police officer who claimed his supervisors retaliated against him because he wouldn't sign a declaration prepared by federal prosecutors in a gang case has been awarded $1.5 million.
The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday that a jury awarded the money to Jamie McBride following a five-day trial.
McBride, a police union official, alleged that he was punished after refusing to sign the declaration involving one of his informants. The newspaper says McBride thought the deceleration wasn't accurate because it didn't include his role in encouraging the information to get close to a gang leader.
McBride claimed he suffers from hypothyroidism that was brought on for stress.
A spokesman for Los Angeles city attorney's office didn't immediately respond to a comment request.
