Santa Anita Suffers Second Horse Death in Two Days

ARCADIA (CNS) - A 7-year-old gelding was euthanized after suffering a broken ankle during a race at Santa Anita Park, the second fatal racehorse injury in two days at the track.

Multiplier fractured his right front ankle in Sunday's third race.

“Horse was transported for diagnostic examination, stabilized in his stall and continually evaluated by veterinary personnel. Because of the severity of the injury, the attending veterinarian recommended humane euthanasia,'' according to a message posted on Santa Anita's website.

Multiplier was owned by Biggleague Racing LLC and trained by Andrew Lerner. He had 37 races to his credit, with four first-place finishes.

He is the eighth horse to die from a racing or training injury during Santa Anita's winter/spring meeting.

On Saturday, My Child Sbud was euthanized after pulling up at the 3/16th pole with a fractured left front ankle during the second race on the main track.

The 3-year-old gelding was owned by Blue Sky Training Center, trained by Oscar Heredia and the jockey was Heriberto Figueroa. Saturday was his first start of 2021 and fifth career start.
