Several LAUSD School Remain Closed Due to Getty Fire, Others Reopen

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - More than a dozen of the nearly 20 Los Angeles Unified School District campuses affected by the Getty Fire will be closed for a third day today.

Affected schools were Brentwood, Canyon, Community Magnet, Kentor Canyon, Marquez, Palisades, Roscomare, Topanga and Warner elementary schools and Revere Middle School, the LAUSD announced Tuesday night.

Discovery Charter Preparatory School in Sylmar will be closed the rest of this week due to the extreme weather conditions and will reopen on Nov. 4, the school said on its website. Palisades Charter High School also announced on its web site it would be closed today.

“Given the uncertainty and impact of the surrounding fires and anticipated strong winds, Palisades Charter High School and Pali Academy will be closed again... Wednesday, October 30,” according to a statement on the school's website. “All scheduled activities and events have been canceled. There will be no buses running to or from PCHS. There will be no access to PCHS buildings. The facility is closed, and we have been asked to advise all to stay out of the area to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.”

Pali Academy is located adjacent to the main campus and has an enrollment of at least 60 students.

“We will continue to monitor conditions to determine if it is possible to open school on Thursday, October 31,” the statement said.

The private John Thomas Dye Elementary School at 11414 Chalon Road in Bel-Air remained closed today.

LAUSD schools reopening today are Brockton, Fairburn, Nora Sterry and Westwood elementary schools, as well as Emerson Middle School, Magnolia Science Academy, #4 and #6, and University High School.

All Santa Monica schools are to be open today.

“We will evaluate conditions and announce by 6 a.m., if this changes,” the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District tweeted Tuesday night. “Malibu schools are closed. Expected conditions for each community differs greatly.”

Undergraduate classes were cancelled for the rest of the week at Mt. Saint Mary's Chalon Campus in Brentwood as well as at the Doheny campus. Graduate classes at the Doheny campus resumed Tuesday.

Chalon classes will be relocated to the Doheny campus next week and a revised schedule for those classes, along with new room assignments, will be available by the end of this week, the school said. All Doheny classes will resume at their regularly scheduled times.
