What we know

  • Senator Paul was mowing the lawn at his house when was tackled from behind by his neighbor, anesthesiologist Rene Boucher.
  • The assailant admitted to sneaking onto Paul's property at about 3:20 PM on Friday.
  • The attack left Paul with 5 fractured ribs, including 3 displaced fractures and lung bruising.
  • Paul is an ophthalmologist, and he and Boucher may have worked together in the medical field.
  • Boucher's social media accounts reveal his political stance was at odds with Paul's.

Doug Stafford, the Kentucky senator's chief of staff issued the following statement detailing the extent of Paul's injuries:

“Senator Paul has five rib fractures including three displaced fractures. This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force. It is not clear exactly how soon he will return to work, as the pain is considerable as is the difficulty in getting around, including flying.”

“Displaced rib fractures can lead to life-threatening injuries such as: hemopneumothorax, pneumothorax, pneumonia, internal bleeding, laceration of internal organs and lung contusions. Senator Paul does have lung contusions currently. This type of injury is also accompanied by severe pain that can last weeks to months.”

“Senator Paul and Kelley appreciate everyone’s thoughts and well wishes and he will be back fighting for liberty in the Senate soon."

Boucher was arrested and charged with one count of fourth-degree assault causing minor injury, the Kentucky State Police said in a statement on Saturday.
